Break Through Tech Miami works at the intersection of academia and industry to propel women and underrepresented communities in Miami into computing degrees and tech careers. Through curriculum innovation, career access, and community building, our goal is to achieve gender equality in tech.
Break Through Tech Miami will launch programs beginning in the summer of 2022 and is focused on casting a wide net to encourage Florida International University (FIU) students to enter the tech academic pipeline and ensuring they feel empowered and prepared as they move through their academic journey and launch their tech careers.
In collaboration with FIU, Break Through Tech programming will begin with Guild workshops for incoming students at FIU and continue with our innovative Sprinternship™ program that gives students the resume credential they need to compete for summer internships.
FIU will additionally engage students in a series of career readiness programs that will help them get their foot in the door of the tech workforce as well as a variety of community building opportunities with their peers and professional women in tech. Alongside this sequence of programming is an ongoing effort at FIU on curriculum innovations that will remove administrative and academic barriers to achieving gender equality in tech.

Goals
Demographic
We aim to foster a supportive community for FIU women who are majoring in computing disciplines (or considering doing so), with a particular emphasis on welcoming Black, Latina, Indigenous, and first-generation women, trans, and nonbinary students. In particular we will welcome women and non-binary students transferring from local community colleges to FIU.
Funding Goal
Impact Goal
Break Through Tech Miami aims to more than triple the number of female students graduating with an FIU computing degree by 2027. For students who participate in the Sprinternship program, we expect that at least 50% of those who are seeking a summer internship will secure one.
